LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer was close several times to breaking a scoreless tie but could not find the back netting in a 0-0 tie with Biola on Wednesday afternoon at Al Barbour Field.
The teams were basically even in total shots but the Penguins (5-9-2, 1-5-2 PacWest) finished with six shots on frame compared to two for the Eagles (4-9-2, 3-4-1 PacWest).
Natalie Haro secured the shutout with two saves and several fantastic reads off her back line to prevent scoring opportunities.
The early minutes of the game went back and forth between the teams with high quality chances being difficult to come by. Dominican had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 14th minute as a misplayed ball back was intercepted by
Marissa Ray who then played a ball to
Miranda Gregory with only the keeper to beat. Gregory tried to put the shot high but it went over the cross bar to keep the game level.
Biola had a shot to open the scoring in the 19th minute as a long cross found the foot of Marije Rechin but a charging
Natalie Haro closed down the angle and swallowed up the attempt to keep her net clean. Serena Andrade put some pace on a shot in the 39th minute but Haro stood tall to make the save and then beat Andrade to the rebound to prevent another attempt.
Six minutes into the second half,
Danielle Gonzalez made a good move as she made a turn past a defender on a pass to once again end up 1-on-1 with the keeper but her shot was off to the left.
Camille Aquino was nearly perfect with a shot from 30-yards out in the 52nd minute as it quickly dipped over the keeper's hands but hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. Dominican allowed no opportunities for Biola in the second half on defense as it controlled the pace of play.
The Penguins will finish its road swing at Westmont in the first meeting between the two squads Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Thorrington Field in Santa Barbara.
