Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins fall to Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO – Dominican women's soccer fell 3-0 Monday afternoon to Point Loma Nazarene University at PLNU Soccer Field.

Just seconds into the match, Tanya Bills put a ball forward that Miranda Gregory was able to redirect on goal but Julia Pinnell made a diving save to her left for the Sea Lions. Natalie Haro then made a pair of saves for the Penguins but Emma Thrapp curled a corner kick towards the goal and Haro was unable to control it cleanly as the ball crossed the line for the 1-0 PLNU lead.

Alejandra Melendez attempted to tie the match in the 9th minute on a free kick near the top of the box but Pinnell gathered in the shot to the center of her net. Marissa Ray then had an opportunity at the equalizer as she received a pass at the top of the box but the defender was able to get enough contact to prevent some pace on the shot and allow Pinnell to make the save.

Zoe Crockett added to the PLNU lead in the 39th minute as she took a pass from Alyssa Ketcham inside the box and used her body to shield the defender before taking a turn to her right and firing a shot far post for the 2-0 lead heading to the half.

Danielle Gonzalez tried to cut into the lead in the 56th minute as she fired a shot from the top of the box on the first touch but Pinnell made yet another save to keep her net clean. Mara Sovde then added to the Sea Lion lead in the 61st minute as she headed a free kick off the crossbar, gathered the rebound and knocked it into the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.

Dominican will look to regroup against Biola on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Al Barbour Field.
