Grande comes up big against Urban Knights

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Diego Grande made history for Dominican men's soccer in a 5-1 rout of Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Grande tied a single-game Penguin record during their NCAA Division II era as he scored four goals but was the first to do so against another NCAA Division II opponent. Wilson Briggs set the previous single game record with four goals against Pacific Union in 2018. Lex Bernier ended the game with a pair of assists for Dominican (6-4-3, 4-1-1 PacWest).

The Penguins struggled early to find holes in the Urban Knights (2-9-4, 2-4-1 PacWest) defense as they played a high back line. Lex Bernier got loose in the 11th minute dribbling down the left side and then past several defenders before sending a hard cross to the front of the net where Grande bodied it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Dominican continued looking for a ball over the top or behind the high press and Christopher Barrios found it in the 25th minute as he found Grande on a through ball who then knocked in his second goal of the game with a left-footed shot to the far post.

The Penguins were not done yet as Thomas Van Schoor brought fresh legs to the pitch and made a good move down the right side before crossing the ball back to the front of the net where Joe Blakely slid through a right foot to punch the ball into the netting for the 3-0 lead in the 39th minute.

ART U tallied its first goal of the game in the 54th minute as Gilly Miller played a free kick near the top of the box short to a cutting Elvis Mensah who put the shot into the top-right corner to trim the deficit to 3-1. Bernier and Grande connected again in the 60th minute as Bernier cut down the back line and played a ball back to Grande near the spot who took a right-footed shot to the right side of the net to push the lead back to three.

Grande then capped off his day as he timed a run perfectly and Brandon Selway played a ball over the top of the back line. Grande was able to control it then used his right-foot to kick the ball off a bounce to the top-right corner for the 5-1 lead.

Dominican will have a week off to prepare for its last Southern California road trip beginning with a game at Point Loma on Monday, October 30 with kickoff set for 1 p.m. PDT at PLNU Soccer Field.
