Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Penguins struggle in second half

SAN DIEGO – Dominican men's soccer fell 6-0 Monday afternoon in a matchup with PacWest front-runner Point Loma Nazarene University at PLNU Soccer Field.

Alejandro Reyes turned away three shots from the Sea Lions in the first half while Lex Bernier had a great scoring opportunity from the top left corner of the box sending a curling shot towards the far post in the 19th minute, but Finn Simmersbach made a diving save to his left to push the shot wide.

Dominican than had another great opportunity early in the second half as the Penguins had a 3-on-2 advantage on the attack in the 51st minute with a cross finding Lex Bernier on the right side of the box who took a shot on an open net but a PLNU defender moved quickly to make up for the missing keeper to get a body in front of the net. The rebound eventually wound up at the feet of Diego Grande who sent a shot high on frame but Simmersbach got a hand on the ball and popped it in the air and caught it before any further shots could be made to keep his net clean.

Juan Salazar then opened the scoring with a free kick in the 54th minute from just outside the box getting a shot around the wall into the lower left corner for a 1-0 Sea Lion lead. Things went from bad to worse quickly as Salazar found Felix Calero in the center of the box less than a minute later for the 2-0 lead. Calero then headed in a corner kick in the 60th minute to take the 3-0 lead and PLNU would add three more goals down the stretch as Dominican struggled to maintain possession.

The Penguins will look to rebound against Biola on Wednesday in the second game of its road trip at Al Barbour Field with kickoff set for noon PDT.
