Box Score San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (12-7, 10-2) earned its ninth straight victory beating Point Loma University (8-12. 6-6) in the Conlan Center.
Freshman
Keyonee Neal and sophomore
Alaiyah San Juan paired for 18 points apiece, adding eight rebounds and three rebounds, respectively. Redshirt senior
Brittney Cedeno added a 16-point, six rebound, five assist and four steal performance to her resume while senior
Maiya Flores rounded out the double-digit scorers with a 13-point evening.
A San Juan jumper got the party started in the opening minute of the first quarter, preceding a
Mikayla Amoroso layup that was separated by Point Loma's first basket of the evening. The Sea Lions took its first and only momentary lead of the game with 4:49 remaining off a midrange jumper but the celebration was short lived as a Neal 3-pointer immediately buried the visitors. Flores completed her signature play moments later, draining a deep ball from her sweet spot that again put Dominican in the lead after Point Loma earned a quick basket. The Flores 3-pointer kick started a quick jump for Dominican as the Penguins marched out to a 7-0 run before Point Loma again found the stat sheet with Dominican earning a 20-15 lead going into the second quarter.
Back-to-back Neal baskets set the tone for the second quarter as Dominican immediately added to the advantage it already owned. Dominican found itself up by a game-high 15 minutes later courtesy of a slew of Cedeno free throws and a Neal 3-pointer that capped off an 8-0 run. San Juan added a midrange jumper and a free throw, in addition to two more Cedeno free throws as Dominican cruised into the locker rooms with a 40-25 lead.
Cedeno and Neal traded buckets with the visitors to begin the second half before Point Loma found its scoring touch, forcing Dominican to squander its 15-point half time lead to soon find itself only leading by five points midway through the frame. Another Flores long ball put Dominican back behind the steering wheel before San Juan extended the lead to double digits moments later. The Sea Lions fought through Dominican's scoring to find itself again down by just six after an Allie Carreon 3-pointer but, in fashion that become a pattern, Dominican separated itself from the herd as Neal drained a late basket to again give her team a double-digit, 58-48 lead going into the final frame.
Cedeno added six successful free throws to her stat line in the final frame coupled with another Flores deep shot that helped Dominican keep itself in control of the contest. Last ditch efforts were given by the Sea Lions in the form of consistent fouls down the stretch paired with successful back-to-back possessions with under a minute remaining but the Penguins proved mighty in the Conlan Center as they trotted off the court to the melody of a ninth straight victory and 10th consecutive conference victory, this time a 78-69 win.
