Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins comeback to earn draw with Sharks

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Dominican women's soccer came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Hawaii Pacific on Thursday evening at Waipio Peninsula Stadium.

Not only was the game a tie but the two teams were close in nearly every stat with both the Sharks and Penguins finishing the match with four shots on goal. HPU held a slight 7-6 advantage in total shots while Dominican led in corner kicks 3-1.

Tanya Bills got the Penguins off to a strong start as she placed the first shot of the game on frame, forcing Madi DePhillips to make the save in the second minute. Kiana Muratsuka was able to cash in on the Sharks first shot of the game as she beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Danielle Gonzalez tested DePhillips again with a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but DePhillips was in place once again to make the save and send HPU into the half with the lead.

The Penguins came out of the break firing once again as Tanya Bills attacked the end line and found Marissa Ray cutting late to the center of the box where Ray buried a shot by the spot into the back netting to tie the match 1-1 in the 47th minute. The Sharks tried to counter as Kayli Ann Yoshioka was turned aside by Angelina Hert and Megumi Miyataki's attempt on the rebound was gathered in by Hert to end the threat in the 53rd minute.

The remainder of the game was mainly a battle in the midfield until the final two minutes when Caylie Uyema had a weak attempt on frame that Hert scooped up and sent the opposite way where eventually Bills sent a ball high on frame, but DePhillips was able to just push it out over the crossbar to preserve the tie.

Dominican will conclude its trip to the islands Saturday against Chaminade with kickoff set for noon HST at Saint Louis Field.
