Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins comeback falls short against Vulcans

HILO, Hawaii – Alison McNeal scored her second goal of the season and Angelina Hert made four saves but Dominican women's soccer fell 3-1 Monday afternoon to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at UHH Soccer Field.

The Vulcans (6-0-1, 1-0-0) rode heavy pressure in the first half to hold a 14-8 advantage on shots with half being put on frame. The Penguins ramped up their pressure in the second half and had a 5-4 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes but it would not be enough.

Hert was outstanding early on as she dove to her right to deflect a shot from Filippa Graneld then quickly regained her feet and made a save on a shot from Teani Arakawa towards the near post in the fifth minute. UHH continued to hold the ball in its attacking third for much of the first half until Grace Verhage moved into the right side of the box and curled a ball inside the far post in the 26th minute to give the Vulcans the 1-0 advantage.

UHH then maintained its shape in an excellent triangle combination early in the second half. Kayla Kunihisa found Daelenn Tokunaga in the middle of the box and she screened her defender and set up Graneld at the top of the box for a shot inside the left post to double the lead in the 49th minute. Dominican began to press into its attacking third as they quickly earned a corner kick and a shot. Jackie Lancaster then moved down the right side and dove inside the box where she sent a ball to a cutting McNeal near post for a back heel flick over the keeper to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.

The next 20 minutes were mainly a battle in the midfield with few scoring opportunities for either side. It was the Vulcans though who finally broke through again as Nanea Wall shot near post where Hert knocked it away but Brende Yoshizumi was in the right place at the right time to clean up the rebound for the 3-1 lead.

The Penguins will travel to Oahu for the second leg of its island road trip as they face Hawai'i Pacific at 4:30 p.m. HST Thursday at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
