San Rafael, CALIF. -- Cal State Monterey Bay (1-1-1) handed Dominican University of California (0-1-2) its first lost of the season by a slim 1-0 margin.
The possession arrow jumped between the two combatants early and often as both teams looked to find its groove in the early stages of the match. Sophomore
Jackie Lancaster earned Dominican's first shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but it was steered aside by Otters' keeper Maleni Moralez. Lancaster and senior
Alison McNeal traded opportunities in the 27th minute in the form of two shots from in-close, but Morales was again up to the task as she kept the game scoreless, a trend that held true heading into the half as both teams looked to gain the advantage.
Junior
Danielle Gonzalez had perhaps the closest opportunity in the 50th minute when she took a corner kick into the box and sent a howitzer towards the frame, but the ball found the outsidee of the left post and stayed out though much of the spectators thought she may have converted on the screaching sharp-angle shot.
The afternoon's lone goal came in the 72nd minute after a throughball was sent onto the foot of Nayeli Gallo Sandoval who made no mistake in sneaking one past Dominican keeper
Jolie Poulet, giving the Otters a one-goal lead that would hold until the end of the match. Dominican applied its fair share of late pressure as the clock wound down, but Monterey Bay was able to level the attack, eventually earning a 1-0 victory.
Dominican now looks ahead to Monday when it plays host to Sonoma State University at 5 p.m. PST.
