Penguins bested by Seawolves

San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University women's soccer (0-2-2) fell to Sonoma State (3-1-0) by the slimmest of margins as the Seawolves walked away with a 1-0 victory.

Seniors Tanya Billa and Aiden Marquez, in addition to sophomore Ireland O'Donnell and junior Eryn Tufts, collected all the shots on goal for the Penguins while Dominican keeper Poulet Jolie collected five saves on the afternoon. Payton Zanatta saw the most action she's seen this year after earning 45 minutes of playing time, being trusted on the back line against a forceful Sonoma State attack, with senior midfielder Gabrielle Wampler and Tufts leading the way in the minutes category.

It wasn't until the 20th minute of play that either team was able to find the target as Poulet settled in a made her first save of the afternoon. Poulet would be tested twice more over an 80-second span, but the senior keeper was up to the task as she fortified a stingy Dominican defense. The game's only goal was scored in the 24th minute after Krissy Keller sent a free kick into the Dominican box and directly onto the foot of Malia Falk who directed the ball into the lower right-90, giving her team a single goal lead that would hold until the end of the match.

There was a fair share of rough stuff midway through the second half as the two teams combined for five yellow cards and one red card with the Seawolves being the recipient of the red card that forced them to play with one less body for the final 30 minutes of the match. The Penguins offense came to life with the newfound space on the field. recording three shots on goal in hopes of an equalizer, but the Seawolves keeper kept her team ahead before eventually walking off with the victory.

Dominican now turns its attention to Saturday afternoon when it plays host to Cal State East Bay.
