SURPRISE, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis narrowly dropped a 4-2 decision to Cal State LA in its first round match at the PacWest Women's Tennis Championships at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
Noa Davico and Sakura Kurokawa took the opening doubles match for the Golden Eagles 6-1 on the second court. Berta Acero and Sarah Olmos sealed the doubles point for CSULA with the 6-3 win in No. 1 doubles to take the 1-0.
Zoe Coggins and
Julia Rydel had a 5-3 lead for the Penguins on court three before the clinch was called leaving the match unfinished.
Acero pushed the Golden Eagle lead to 2-0 as she defeated
Gina Dudley 6-1, 6-0 on court three, but
Gigi Alajeely took a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Courtlyn Lam to give Dominican its first team point of the match. Davico put CSULA a singles victory from the clinch with the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
Julia Rydel gave the Penguins one more point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on No. 4 singles but Chelsey Ruiz held off a late charge from
Zoe Coggins for the 6-1, 6-4 victory to clinch the game for the Golden Eagles.
Dominican will return to the court Thursday to take on Metro State at 5 p.m. MST in the consolation bracket.
