SURPRISE, Ariz. – Dominican women's tennis ended its 2022 campaign with a 5-2 victory over No. 11-seed MSU Denver at the PacWest Women's Tennis Championships at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
The Penguins had early advantages in singles and doubles as the Roadrunners were missing a full lineup with
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley taking advantage with a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles to give Dominican the doubles point. With a default victory in No. 6 singles, MSU Denver found themselves in a 2-0 hole but Gala Castello cut the deficit in half with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in No. 2 doubles. Isabel Harris then knotted the score 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the top court to hit a reset button on the match.
Gigi Alajeely wasted little time in giving Dominican back its advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 victory of her own over Monica Guarin. Needing just one singles victory to clinch the match the Penguins held a strong advantage as
Zoe Coggins and
Julia Rydel each claimed a 6-2 victory in the first set of the matches at No. 3 and 4 singles. The second sets though proved to be much more difficult as Kayla Myburgh and Marie Cool matched their Dominican counterparts with each passing game sending both to a tiebreaker at 6-6. The finish did not disappoint as the Roadrunners gave it their all to stave off elimination but Rydel won her tiebreaker 8-6 and Coggins added a 7-4 victory in a near synchronous finish to seal the victory.
