SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis bounced back from a two-match skid with a 7-0 victory Saturday over rival Holy Names at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
"It was great to get a convincing conference win," head coach
Cristina Visico Hassanali said. "After yesterday's loss we really focused on rebounding today with positive energy and going back to the basics. We competed really strong and are focusing to get better even as we get to the end of the road of the schedule against our conference."
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley wasted no time in doubles jumping ahead 5-0 early before closing out a 6-2 victory over Ana Rios and Lada Baglaeva. The Hawks (2-9) only had four players so the victory sealed the doubles point for the Penguins (8-6). HNU's lone bright spot came in No. 2 doubles where Lucy Reckasch and Ella Lavender overcame a 4-2 deficit to take the match 6-4.
Gigi Alajeely continue to work her way back into the lineup as she claimed a 6-1 first set victory over Lavender and Lavendar had to retire early to clinch the team match for the Penguins due to the Hawk roster shortage. No. 45 Rafols then claimed her 11th singles victory of the season as she topped Rios 6-1, 6-1 on the top court.
Julia Rydel claimed her first victory in the No. 2 spot as she held off an early challenge from Baglaeva for a 6-4 victory in the first set and then polished it off with a 6-2 win in the second set to seal the match.
Dudley was in the tightest battle of the day with Reckasch at No. 3 singles. Reckasch held the early advantage as she held on for a 6-4 victory in the first set, but Dudley answered in an equally close 7-5 second set victory. Dudley used that momentum going into the tiebreaker, claiming a more comfortable 10-5 victory to seal the sweep.
Dominican will return to the court Wednesday to makeup a postponed match at Stanislaus State beginning at 2 p.m. PDT.
