HONOLULU – Dominican softball ran its winning streak to four as it swept Chaminade with 2-0 and 5-1 victories Sunday afternoon at Sand Island Park.
Lauren Lapinid led the way for the Penguins (7-12, 4-6 PacWest) going 5-for-7 from the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Celeste Salas added a 2-for-4 day from the plate with three RBI. Dominican's pitching trio of
Shelby Keltner,
Kathryn Caravalho and
Rosa Leguria held the SIlverswords (4-4, 2-2 PacWest) to one run on the day to replicate its last performance in a doubleheader sweep of Biola.
"I'm so proud of how we fought as a unit today," head coach
Juliana Santos said. "We had the mindset of us versus them and it took every single player today to pull it out. Those were big team wins."
Game one
Lapinid singled on a line drive to right center as
Peyton Mott and Keltner walked to load the bases with one out for Dominican in the first inning. Jaeda Cabunoc worked her way out of the jam with help from Taryn Fujioka at shortstop who grabbed a line drive and popup to end the inning.
Chaminade returned the favor in the bottom of the third as Haley Hayakawa singled to shallow right and Fujioka followed up by reaching on a catcher's interference. Cheyne Obara then singled up the middle but
Melissa Garcia was able to hold the runners with her throw home and the bases were loaded for Kobe Brown. Brown hit a sharp groundball to Lapinid at short who scooped and threw home to Salas who flipped it to first for the inning-ending double play.
Keltner quickly singled up the middle through the left side in the top of the fourth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt as the Penguins looked to break the tie.
Faith Erb then hit a ball into the hole on the left side and the throw by Fujioka was not in time at first to put runners on the corners. After Erb stole second, Salas singled up the middle and both runners came home for the 2-0 lead.
Chaminade got a runner on base for each of their remaining frames but was unable to get the clutch hit against Keltner. Keltner put the cherry on top of her complete-game shutout in the bottom of the seventh as she left the final three batters looking at strike three for the victory. With the victory, Keltner moved to 4-7 on the season.
Game two
The Silverswords struck first in the second game as Brown was hit by a pitch and Cabunoc sent a ball to the left-field fence for a double that gave them the 1-0 lead after one full inning. Dominican looked to answer in the top of the third as
Helena Harris singled to center field to lead off the inning and
Jillian Lampa laid down a perfect bunt and beat the throw to first. Lapinid then singled to left field to load the bases with one out but Taylor Genera got the next batter swinging and a fly out to left ended the threat.
Chaminade threatened in the fourth as Hayakawa walked and Kailah Gates-Coyaso followed on a bunt single back to the circle to lead off the frame. After a popout to third for the first out of the inning, Leguria entered the game and promptly retired the next two batters on five pitches to leave both runners stranded in scoring position.
Lampa singled to second base for her second infield single of the game before stealing second to move into scoring position in the top of the fifth. Lapinid then stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered the tie for the Penguins as she sent a ball into right center past the diving glove of Chasity McKean. The hit opened the flood gates as Salas entered as a pinch hitter and singled to left field to score Lapinid from second. Mott reentered to run and quickly stole second before Keltner laced a ball down the left-field line to make it 3-1.
Bella Romani stepped up next and sent the first pitch she saw back up the middle to extend the lead to three heading to the bottom of the frame.
Harris walked to lead off the sixth and moved to second on a groundout before
Mady Salonga entered as a pinch hitter and singled down the left-field line to make it 5-1. Leguria took care of business in the final two frames to move to 2-2 on the season.
Dominican will conclude its series with Chaminade Monday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. HST at Howard Okita Field in Kaneohe.
