Penguins fall twice to Chaminade on day two of matchup

Kaneohe, Hawai'I — Dominican University of California softball (7-13, 4-7 PacWest) dropped both of its games (1-0, 5-4 (10 innings)) to Chaminade University (5-4, 3-2 PacWest) on Monday.

Game One

The introductory game of the afternoon concluded in just 64 minutes as the two teams combined for seven total hits and one run. Junior Celeste Salas and senior Peyton Mott were the only two Dominican batters to tally hits in game one, both coming as singles.

The long run of game one came early when Taryn Fujioka led off her order with a triple to left center in the bottom of the first. Junior Shelby Keltner struck out the next batter to tally the first out, but a Chastity McKean sacrifice fly scored the runner that was patiently waiting on third. Keltner forced the next batter to fly out, but not before the game's only run was scored, a run that proved to be enough as Chaminade earned the 1-0 victory.

Keltner pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The strong performance came just hours after Keltner earned the PacWest Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced earlier Monday morning.

Game Two

The second and final game of the doubleheader lasted two hours and 32 minutes, a much more ordinary time as compared to the sprint in the preceding game. Freshman Alicia Garcia tallied Dominican's first hit of the game in the top of the second when she doubled to left center, then stealing third on a Kamaleinani Kaleikini sacrifice bunt. The next two batters were retired by Chaminade's Jaeda Cabunoc, leaving Garcia on third base.

Dominican poured on the runs in the bottom of the third, starting with a Helena Harris single to leadoff the order. Freshman Melissa Garcia advanced Harris via bunt to place a Penguin in scoring position, with both runners advancing another base courtesy of a Jillian Lampa bunt. Junior Mady Solonga was sent to third as a pinch runner, soon scoring the game's first run after Salas reached first on a fielding error. A pair of errors helped Dominican score two more runs, capping of a three-run inning that gave the Penguins a 3-0 lead.

The 3-0 lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning when a Larchelle Tuifao triple to right field scored the second running of the inning, cutting the Penguins lead to 3-2. Dominican doubled its lead in the ensuing inning when junior Lauren Lapinid doubled to left to score Lampa, but a two-run bottom half of the inning knotted the game at 4-4. The game would need extras, and lots of them, as it wasn't until the bottom of the 10th inning when a Chaminade sacrifice fly scored the game winning run, giving the Silver Swordsmen a 5-4 victory.
