DALY CITY, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 7-0 Saturday to Academy of Art at Bay Club Tennis & Pickleball,
The doubles point was a tightly contested point between the two teams as Viktoria Leth and Julia Ortega were able to hold on to a slim lead for the Urban Knights (5-2) to take No. 2 doubles 6-4 over
Julia Rydel and
Zoe Coggins of the Penguins (4-4). Dominican's
Gigi Alajeely and
Haley Garcia did not give an inch to their ART U competitors, Maria Cassucci and Paulina Alvarez, as they traded games on No. 3 doubles to a 6-6 tie and forcing a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was just as tightly contested but Cassucci and Alvarez were able to hold on 7-4 to take the match and the doubles point.
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley held the 6-5 advantage over their Urban Knight competitors in No. 1 doubles but with the team point decided the match was left unfinished.
Cassucci pressed the advantage for ART U as she took No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3 with Leth claiming No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 to get within one match of the team victory. Ortega provided that clinching victory at No. 4 singles winning 6-1, 6-2. Dominican had some bright spots in the match as Rafols played strong in No. 1 singles against No. 18 Sofia Ragona as they were squared at 6-6 in the first set, but Ragona won the tiebreaker and then held on for the 6-3 victory in the second set for the Urban Knights.
Zoe Coggins bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set as she took the 7-6 (2) victory in the second set as the lone Penguin to win a set. With the team match already decided Coggins and Alvarez went into a tiebreaker set, but Alvarez finished out the sweep with a 10-5 victory for the Urban Knights.
Dominican will look to bounce back Sunday as it faces Holy Names at 2 p.m. at Meyer Tennis Center on the campus of Mills College.
