Hilo, Hawaii — Dominican University of California earned a Monday sweep over the University of Hawaii at Hilo (1-0, 4-3) behind pristine play behind junior
Shelby Keltner.
GAME ONE
A complete and utter pitching dual, in its purest of forms, wrote the story of the introductory game of the day. Keltner allowed just two hits over the course of the first seven innings while Hilo's Alexis Lacy left Dominican searching for answers as she held a clean, no-hit slate going into extras. Ironically enough, Keltner broke the no-no with a single to start extras, with freshman
Melissa Garcia doubling the hit total while doubling the ball into left field, advancing Keltner's pinch runner, freshman
Caitlyn Perales, to third base. The two runners would be left stranded when a double play at the next Penguins at-bat ended the inning, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.
Keltner added a 1-2-3 inning to her repertoire in the bottom of the 8
th as she continued her dominance from the circle. Junior Mady Solonga notched a double in the top of the 9
th as Dominican's offense continued to find its bearings, but Solonga would too be left stranded. A leadoff single in the bottom of the inning yielded no fruit for the Vulcans as Keltner then retired three straight to keep the game even with no runs showing on the scoreboard.
With a decision to place a runner on second base to start the inning being agreed on by the two combatants, the Penguins were able to strategically advance junior
Lauren Lapinid to third base. Keltner then sent a perfectly placed sacrifice fly to left field, deep enough to score the runner as Dominican was the first to lay claim on the scoreboard. Hilo was unable to mirror the actions of Dominican as Keltner immaculately finished what she had spent the entirety of the game working on, striking out the final two batters to give Dominican a 1-0 victory.
GAME TWO
Hilo earned the first run of the follow-up game after the third base runner scored on a passed ball. Dominican provided an immediate answer during the ensuing inning, kickstarted by a Keltner single to lead off the inning. Keltner then advanced on a wild pitch before being advanced to third via Solonga's sacrifice bunt, with junior
Bella Romani joining her on the bases after being hit by a pitch. Keltner scored during the next at bat when she scored on a wild pitch, bringing the game back even. Junior
Kamaleinani Kaleikini snagged the lead for Dominican with a single to left that scored Romani, giving Dominican a 2-1 advantage.
The Penguins doubled their lead in the top of the 3
rd after Garcia forced a bases-loaded walk that scored freshman
Jillian Lampa. A Vulcans' bunt in the bottom of the inning sliced the lead in half as the score showed 3-2 on the scoreboard. Hilo tied the matchup a pair of innings later with a homerun to right field, bringing the score to 3 aside. It wasn't until the final inning that Dominican notched the run that sealed the sweep as junior
Faith Erb started the inning with a leadoff walk. A Lampa single put her on base while also advancing Erb but was later caught attempting to steal third. Lapinid singled to center to advance Lampa to third before a single courtesy of senior
Peyton Mott scored Lampa, marking the game-winning run.
