SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Alicia Garcia powered Dominican softball to a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art as it won 3-0 in Sunday's first game before a 9-1 victory in six innings in the second at Penguin Field.
A. Garcia was nearly flawless on the day going 6-for-7 from the plate with two home runs, a double and seven RBI. She now has all three of the Penguins' (12-19, 9-13 PacWest) home runs this season.
Shelby Keltner pitched a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts to move to 7-11 on the season from the cirlcle in the first game.
Kathryn Caravalho allowed one run in six innings pitched to earn the victory in the second game and move her season record to 3-5.
Game one
Keltner was on fire to start the day as the first eight outs of the game were all strikeouts with three runners left stranded. After Keltner struck out two more in the top of the fourth,
Celeste Salas reached on an error and
Melissa Garcia singled up the middle to put two on with one out. A. Garcia answered the call with a double off the top of the left-field fence to score both runners.
Faith Erb doubled on a soft line drive down the right-field line to bring home one more for the 3-0 lead heading to the fifth.
Bethany Mitchell walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt for the Urban Knights (2-26, 1-9 PacWest) as they looked to answer. After Mitchell stole third, Keltner sent a ball past the swinging bat of Haley Randall for the final out of the inning. Keltner did not allow another runner to pass first as she locked down the victory.
Game two
Lauren Lapinid doubled off the fence in deep center field to lead off the bottom of the first in the second game.
Jillian Lampa laid down a perfect bunt toward third and beat the throw to put runners at the corners with no outs. Lampa stole second, but A. Garcia left no doubt as she sent a line drive out of left center to give Dominican the 3-0 lead.
Lampa singled to second to lead off the bottom of the third and quickly stole second before A. Garcia singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Salas brought home Lampa on a single to left. After
Peyton Mott advanced both runners into scoring position with one out, M. Garcia sent a long fly ball to center that allowed A. Garcia to tag up and come home for the 5-0 lead.
Elle Edeker singled down the third base as she beat out a throw to first to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Alyssa Brundage followed with a single through the left side and Carina Sanchez bounced a ball off the infield dirt and over first base into right field to allow Edeker to score ART U's first run of the day. Caravalho left the remaining two runners stranded as she retired the next two batters.
Kama Kaleikini walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lapinid singled to left center but Kaleikini was held at second on the throw. A. Garcia once again came through in the clutch with a 2-out single down the left-field line to bring her home. After a walk loaded the bases, Mott singled to left center to score two more and extend the lead to 8-1.
After a scoreless fifth, Caravalho struck out the first two batters of the sixth and Lampa secured a fly ball in left for the final out of the inning. A. Garcia stepped to the plate one last time and worked herself into a full count with one out before ending the game as she sent a ball over the center-field wall for her second home run of the game.
The Penguins will head south to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. PDT at the Otter Sports Complex.
