SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball claimed its first victory over Sonoma State since 2017 with a 6-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Monday at Penguin Field.
Shelby Keltner excelled on both offense and defense going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run and a double. Keltner added 10 strikeouts in a complete-game victory to move to 2-3 on the year from the circle for the Penguins (3-5). Kama Kaleikini added a 1-for-2 day from the plate with three RBI.
Keltner started the game on fire as she struck out seven batters in the first three innings and allowed one hit. After Dominican left a pair of runners stranded in the bottom of the second it once again found itself in position to plate runners in the bottom of the third. A pair of walks and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with
Peyton Mott drawing a pickle between first and second allowing
Jillian Lampa to take advantage and steal home for the first run of the game.
Another walk and an error brought Kama Kaleikini to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Kaleikini lined a shot off the top of the fence in left to clear the bases and put the Penguins in front 4-0 heading to the fourth. Keltner added two more strikeouts in the top of the fourth to leave runners stranded at second and third and keep the board clean.
Keltner then helped herself as she singled to center field with an error and a walk loading the bases for Mott. Mott came through with a deep fly ball to right field to bring in pinch-runner
Mady Salonga from third for the 5-0 lead.
After retiring the first two batters of the fifth, Keltner hit the next two batters and they then stole bases to get to second and third. Keltner looked as if she would get out of the inning without allowing a run but a dropped fly ball in left field allowed both runners to score to shrink the SSU deficit to three.
After no runners scored over the next two frames, Keltner doubled to deep center to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Mott then cashed in on the scoring opportunity with a single through the left side to add an insurance run heading into the final inning where Keltner quickly retired three for the win.
