SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball fell 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Monday afternoon against Sonoma State at Penguin Field.
Kama Kaleikini,
Lauren Lapinid,
Danielle Ramos and
Faith Erb all collected hits for the Penguins, but they were unable to put together the timely hitting they needed as Jesse Dupuis collected six strikeouts in a complete game shutout for the Seawolves.
The Seawolves got off to a strong start in the second game as Cassidy Romano doubled down the left field line and stole third with one out. After Jordyn Martinez walked, Giana Hays singled to shallow left center to bring in the first run of the game. Courtney Jack continued the hit parade with a single to left to bring in another run for SSU. Lauren Mirtoni laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score one and reach safely on the fielder's choice. A groundout to short brought one more Seawolf across in the inning as they led 4-0.
Melissa Garcia reached on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Peyton Mott then reached as Garcia baited a throw home to put runners on the corners with one out. Jesse Dupuis worked herself out of the jam getting a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
Hays singled to center to lead off the third inning and stole second before moving to third on a fly out. Hays then scored on a muffed catch at first base to make it 5-0. Romano added a run in a similar fashion as she tripled to center and the throw hit her foot as she slid into third before making its way into the dugout being awarded home on the throwing error. Hays then scored again in the top of the fifth off a Mirtoni single to make it 7-0. Mirtoni capped off her offensive outburst with a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh to end the scoring.
Dominican will return to the diamond Thursday to take on Concordia University Irvine in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST to open conference play at Penguin Field.
