San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California
Redshirt senior Britteny Cedeno tallied her first basket of the night just five seconds into the contest after graduate student intercepted the tip-off and dished the ball to Cedeno for a driving layup. Freshman
Keyonee Neal followed with a bucket on the Penguins' next trip down the floor before Cedeno found nothing but net from deep. Cedeno and Neal combined for a pair of baskets to give Dominican an 11-0 run to start the game before Chaminade found the twine for the first time near the five minute mark.
Sophomore
Alaiyah San Juan found the score sheet for the first time with just shy of three minutes remaining in the first half with a midrange jumper before sinking a 3-pointer on Dominican's next possession. Cedeno sent a pass to a streaking Neal near that top of the key that led to another Neal basket, giving the freshman six first quarter points Sophomore
Jazmine Barnes drove the left lane before tallying a left-handed off-balance layup with 60 seconds remaining before freshman
Amelia Brady forced a jump ball on her defensive end to give Dominican the final possession of the first frame. The Penguins capitalized on the newfound opportunity as San Juan found herself in the paint before dishing a pass to junior
Olga Faasolo who was posted at the top of the arc. Faasolo, being closely defended, juked to her right before hitting a deep step back jumper to give Dominican a 22-7 advantage after the opening quarter.
Barnes welcomed Chaminade back to the court with a 3-pointer after a Faasolo jumper on Dominican's first possession. Chaminade answered with a pair of buckets but the Dominican offense kept pouring it on this time courtesy of a Cedeno shot from deep to give her team a 20-point 32-12 lead. Brady continued to find her stride on both sides of the floor as she connected on her first basket of the night before earning a block under the rim on her defensive side of the floor to keep Dominican well ahead of the opposition. A steal from sophomore
Alex Salise preceded another Barnes bucket as Dominican used quick passing to fly up the court, forcing the Chaminade defense to be in disarray with the clinical ball movement. A late Chaminade bucket lessened the deficit but the sting still remained as Dominican took a 43-22 lead into the locker rooms.
San Juan earned the first score of the second with a pull up jumper to the left of the foul line before Charlton tallied a driving lay-in. A San Juan shot from deep gave Dominican a 7-0 run to start the quarter as San Juan had 12 points on 67% shooting to this point. Neal earned a driving layup after a succesful foul shot stopped the streak but another San Juan 3-pointer sent the Penguins on another run with Duley also draining a 3-pointer after no-look swing from Neal in the paint landed directly into her open hands before she added two baskets of her own. A Cedeno cross-court pass found Duley who gave thanks to the pass with a pull-up jumper moments later, preceding another Neal layup that kept the scoring streak alive as it stood at 16-0 when the buzzer sounded to end the quarter. Dominican held a 66-23 advantage heading into the final frame as the defense didn't give up a single field goal in the third quarter with the visitors earning just a lone foul shot to add to their point total.
Chaminade broke the streak early in the second half to put themselves back in the scoring column after the Dominican defense left them without a field goal for 12 minutes and 13 seconds without a field goal dating back to the second quarter. Junior Riley Sarasua converted on a pair of free throws before senior Maia Flores drained a 3-pointer, all preceding a
Ysobelle Eustaquio driving layup that put Dominican up by 50 points. Chaminade earned a trio of points on a successful and-1 with less than four minutes remaining but more offense from Dominican was on the horizon as Brady earned a turnaround jumper from a few feet in front of the rim on Dominican's next possession. Barnes celebrated a full-court pass that found Brady directly under the rim on the Penguins' next possession prior to another Brady bucket on the next possession, then another moments later as she earned four baskets in as many possession while time was winding down. Eventually, the scoring would cease to continue as Dominican earned a very decisive
San Juan led the team with 15 points as everyone lent a helping hand on the score sheet with Brady and Neal each earning 14 and Cedeno adding 13. Faasolo and Neal both snagged a game-high nine rebounds with Cedeno adding eight in addition to a game-high four assists by Duley.
Dominican now looks ahead to Saturday when it plays gracious host to visiting Biola University.
