Penguins hold off late surge by Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball held off a second-half surge by Biola to win 62-58 Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Center.

Brittney Cedeno did a bit of everything for the Penguins (5-7, 3-2 PacWest) finishing with 13 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and five assists. Jenna Duley added 11 points and three rebounds, while Alaiyah San Juan finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Jordan Rabe led the Eagles (3-8, 3-2 PacWest) with 13 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Natasa Radovic finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

After the teams began the game trading buckets, Cedeno took over on both ends of the court as she took away an outlet pass and laid the ball in before quickly turning around and taking away the inbounds for another fastbreak layup to spark a run. Alex Salise kept it rolling as she stole the ensuing inbounds pass under the hoop for an easy layup and Jordan Charlton stole the next one for another layup to make it 18-11. The Penguins capped the 10-0 run as San Juan corralled a long rebound and Olga Faasolo converted a turnaround jumper to extend the lead to nine with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Rabe knocked down a 3-pointer to end the first quarter and made another to start the second to close the gap to 20-17 seconds into the new period. After trading buckets for the next five minutes, Cedeno made a brilliant defensive play stealing the ball and throwing it off an Eagle player to retain possession before finding Maiya Flores in the left corner for a 3-pointer. The corner stayed hot for Dominican as Duley knocked one down before Flores again connected from the same spot to extend the lead to 33-22 with 1:35 remaining and the teams traded a pair of baskets to end the half.

San Juan made a step back 3-pointer to start the new half of play but Biola scored the next six with Laila Walker knocking down a three of her own to cap the run and cut the deficit to 38-30 with 7:57 left in the period. Flores immediately answered this time from the right corner before Duley knocked a long-distance shot from the right wing to extend the lead back to double digits just one minute later. Biola began to close the gap once again as Jaci Bolden converted a 3-point play before Radovic connected behind the arc to make it 49-44 with 1:13 remaining in the third.

The Eagles finally tied the game as Sydney Moran knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 52-52 with 6:45 left in the game. Duley grabbed an offensive board and scooped in a layup against the bigger defender to stop the momentum as the teams began to trade points. After Biola could not convert on four second-chance opportunities, Faasolo knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line off an inbounds play and a defensive stop led to a Cedeno pullup jumper to make it 58-54 with 1:29 remaining. San Juan blocked a desperation 3-pointer by Walker and Duley got a contested rebound as San Juan sealed the game from the free-throw line.

Dominican will finish its pre-Christmas schedule Monday as it hosts Azusa Pacific at 1 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center.
