Saint Martin's second half push too much for Penguins

Box Score Bellingham, WASH. -- Dominican University of California (2-4) fell to Saint Martin's (3-4) behind a second half push that saw the Saints outscore Dominican by 15, ultimately leading to a 79-69 Penguins loss.

Junior transfer Olga Faasolo posted her best statistical game, earning 19 points in just 18 minutes, the most she's had in both categories. Her offensive outburst came courtesy of 60% shooting from the field, in addition to nine rebounds, two steals and a block. Mikayla Amorosa followed on Faasolo's footsteps by also posting her best game of the young season, earning 17 points on 60% shooting, including a trio of 3-pointers. The sophomore transfer added six rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist.

Redshirt senior Brittney Cedeno rounded out the trio of players with double digit points, netting 12 while adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals. The second of Cedeno's steals came late in the first half when she dished a ball to Amoroso who drained a long ball that put Dominican up by a game-high 11, 34-23, with 48 seconds remaining in the introductory frame. Quick back-to-back 3-pointers put the Saints right back into the game before the halftime horn as the two teams left the half just five points apart with the score reading 34-29.

Consecutive Saint Mary's baskets put it in the drivers seat as it earned more consecutive long balls to go up by one. The two teams spent the remainder of the third frame trading baskets though the Saints did find themselves up by as many as nine, but Dominican battled back as a late Faasolo layup cut the deficit to just two points at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter was largely spent near Dominican's basket as the Saints eventually earned the 79-69 win, dropping Dominican's record to 2-4.

The Penguins will now take their talents to southern California with the conference season on the horizon with Concordia University of Irvine and Point Loma University up first.
