Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Penguins fall to Warriors in three

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 Saturday night to Stanislaus State at the Conlan Center.

Ella Heckman led the way with 12 kills for the Penguins while Gabi Maiocco finished the match with 15 assists and an ace. Makenna Carrillo finished the match with eight kills and five aces for the Warriors while Haley Burdo added 31 assists.

Carrillo and Alex Byrd led the early charge for Stanislaus State as each had a pair of kills during a 5-1 run to take the early lead. The Warriors continued to add to their lead with several small 3-point runs with Carrillo pushing it to a large lead of 11 with three aces and a kill during a 5-0 run as they secured the 1-0 lead in the match.

Stanislaus State continued to do damage from the service line in the second set as Gabby Rawson served up a pair of aces during a 5-0 run to take the 7-3 lead. Heckman hit through hands for a kill and a Warrior attack error closed the gap to two where the set would remain for several minutes. Attack errors derailed the close set for Dominican as the Warriors used a 5-0 run to pull ahead 21-14. Dominican was unable to close the gap down the stretch as it fell behind 2-0 in the match.

Autumn Kirby had the hot hand for Stanislaus State in the third set as she used some timely swings to help build an 8-5 lead early. Carrillo then stepped back to the service line and helped her team pull away to a 9-point lead with a pair of aces. Jasmine Heyward came off the bench and bookended a 4-0 run with a pair of kills, but the deficit was too great to overcome as the Warriors secured the 25-14 set victory for the sweep.

Dominican will hit the road next week as it takes on Chaminade at 7 p.m. HST Wednesday at McCabe Gym in Honolulu.
