Box Score HONOLULU – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 Wednesday night to PacWest frontrunner Chaminade as it opened its island road trip at McCabe Gym.
Vanna Marquez led the Penguins with a pair of aces to go with eight kills, but the Silverswords lived up to their reputation as Sasha Columbo finished the match with eight kills and two of her teams 12 aces.
Chaminade wasted no time establishing their strong service game as Alexia Byrnes recorded an ace on her first serve as she helped her team to a quick 6-1 lead. Nanna Inoue then added two more aces in a 5-0 run that saw the Silverswords extend their lead to seven. Dominican's first run came late in the set as
Vanna Marquez had two aces of her own and her third serve was too hot to handle resulting in an easy kill for
Edee Leslie on the overpass to cap the 4-0 run that closed the deficit to 20-11. Latasia Saulala broke Chaminade out of the rut with back-to-back kills and the Silverswords held on for the 25-13 set victory.
Chaminade kept the pressure on in the second set as Byrnes began the set with an ace to start but
Jasmine Heyward and
Edee Leslie found the floor for a pair of kills to keep the set tied for the Penguins. Sophie Schilling flexed her muscle on offense and defense as she put down a pair of kills and combined with Byrnes on a block to lead a 9-1 lead to build a 12-4 lead. Chaminade continued to build off the momentum of the run extending the lead to as large as 13 on the way to a 25-13 victory to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
After trading the first few points of the first set, Kaybrie Pe'a had a pair of aces to lead a 5-0 run that saw the Silverswords build a 10-4 lead.
Emma Hartvickson and
Sara Hiebert each had a kill to keep the set from running away from the Penguins as they kept within four. Small runs helped Chaminade pull away for the 25-15 set victory for the sweep.
Dominican will return to action Thursday at 7 p.m. HST to take on Hawaii Pacific at The Shark Tank.
