Dominican falls to Azusa Pacific

San Rafael, CALIF. – Dominican University of California women's soccer (2-5-4, 0-3-1) fell to conference foe Azusa Pacific (4-2-3, 1-0-1) 2-0 on Thursday at Kennelly Field.

A pair of corner kicks welcomed the combatants to the pitch with the two sides each earning their opportunity in the fifth and seventh minutes, respectively. Freshman keeper Angelina Hert received her first test in the 18th minute, proving to be equal to the task as she recorded her first save on the afternoon, but a shot just 20 seconds later would find the back of the net as the Cougars took an early one-goal lead.

Dominican attempted to return the favor in the 21st minute when the Penguins also recorded a pair of shots within seconds of one another, but neither strike was able to find the net. Dominican's first shot on target came from senior Eryn Tufts in the 42nd minute, a shot that was corralled by Cougar keeper Maddie Williams as she literally and figuratively secured the 1-0 lead as the teams headed into the half.

Senior Tanya Bills recorded the first shot of the second half in the 52nd minute but Williams again made the stop. Bills would press again just eight minutes later in the 60th minute when her shot was steered aside by a sprawling Williams, and a follow-up strike by senior Alison McNeal rang off the top woodwork as Dominican kept its foot on the gas pedal. The potential crisis would be averted by the Cougars just 10 minutes later as they doubled their lead courtesy of a Nora Oldmark goal, bringing the score to 2-0.

Dominican's attack threatened in the late stages, with the final press coming from junior Jackie Lancaster as she streaked towards the goal in the right side of the attackers' box, but her strike would narrowly miss the near side of the goal. Despite the push, Azusa Pacific earned the 2-0 victory to improve to 1-0-1 in conference play.

Bills led the way with a pair of shots that found the target on a trio of attempts, with Tufts's lone shot adding to the Penguin total of three shots on target, with eight total strikes being directed towards the frame.
