SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 27-25) Wednesday night to Holy Names at the Conlan Center.
Jasmine Heyward did a little of everything for the Penguins as she finished the match with 5 kills, two blocks, an ace and 10 digs.
Emma Hartvickson,
Ella Heckman and
Edee Leslie all added five kills of their own for Dominican while
Gabi Maiocco finished with 17 assists. Lauren Sera led the Hawks with 12 kills while Saupuni Mavaega finished with 8 kills and five aces.
Mavaega led the early charge for HNU as she found the floor on a kill before reeling off four consecutive aces to take an early 6-1 advantage.
Avery Schneider led the Penguin response as she broke the momentum with a kill before combining with
Teddy Batinkova for a block to end a 3-point run that cut the deficit to two. It remained close for the next few minutes until Rein Bocage had a pair of aces to lead a 6-0 run that pushed the Hawks' lead to 14-6 and they never looked back as they added to the lead on the way to the 25-12 set victory.
The service game remained a strong point for HNU in the second set as Ayanna Barham and Mavaega each had an ace while Sera added a pair of kills during a 9-1 run to build the seven-point lead. Errors plagued Dominican during the set as five straight pushed HNU to a 15-4 advantage. The teams traded points the rest of the way and the Hawks took a 2-0 advantage in the match.
HNU took the 7-2 lead in the third set, but this time the Penguins found an answer as
Amani Abed found the floor for a kill to spark a 3-0 run that kept them within two. After Sera helped extend the lead back to four, Heckman hit through hands for a kill and an HNU error put Dominican within striking distance. The set began to follow a pattern as the Hawks extended the lead to four, but the Penguins would answer and quickly cut back within two. Leslie then came alive for Dominican as she opened a 5-0 run with a kill before combining with Hartvickson for a block and finally she ended the run finding an empty spot on the attack for a kill to get to set point. Mavaega found the floor on the next rally to keep the Hawks from dropping the set and then Sera ended it with a personal 3-0 run to take the 27-25 set victory.
Dominican will travel south to take on Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Special Events Center.
