Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Penguins fall to Vulcans

HILO, Hawai'i – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo in its final match of a three game road trip at Vulcan Gymnasium.

Vanna Marquez led the Penguins with four aces and 21 digs while Ella Heckman added seven kills. Sophia Charpentier and Nikki Logan led the Vulcans with nine kills each.

After trading points over the opening minutes, Heckman had a powerful cross court swing to spark a Dominican run. Sophia Hull ended the first half of the 7-1 run with an ace and Hilo errors fueled the back half as the Penguins grabbed a 13-8 lead. Cara Bolte had back-to-back kills to spark a late 11-1 run as Hilo sprinted past Dominican late for the 25-19 set victory.

Marquez went on a tear to open the second set as she served up three aces to lift the Penguins to a 5-2 advantage, but the Vulcans responded with a 4-0 run of their own as the teams once again began to trade points. Charpentier found the floor on back-to-back kills power a 4-1 run that pushed the Hilo lead to three but an Emma Hartvickson kill and an ace from Gabi Maiocco quickly closed the gap back to one. Kamryn Childs ended the back and forth scoring as she served up a pair of aces in a 5-0 run which gave the Vulcans a 20-14 lead. It was all the gap they would need to close out the 2-0 lead in the match.

The teams traded points early again but Childs found the floor for a kill to start a 4-1 Hilo run that pushed it to a 16-12 lead. The Vulcans then added five more unanswered to push the lead to eight as they went on to secure the sweep.

Dominican will return home to face Holy Names in its Breast Cancer Awareness match Wednesday at 6 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center.
