Box Score San Rafael, Calif. – Dominican University of California women's basketball tallied its largest margin of victory since joining the NCAA, routing Holy Names by an unsymmetrical final score of 114-40.
"I liked our energy. Our team showed a lot of love for each other tonight as they toasted the success of their teammates," associate head coach
Greg Rahn said. "As a coach, this is exactly what you want to see. We didn't want to stop playing our game, and tonight we played at a high, consistent level."
An administrative technical foul was given to the hosts due to a malfunctioning shot clock, leading to a unique start to the contest as Holy Names jumped out to a 1-0 lead before tip-off. Senior
Brittney Cedeno answered the call as she gave the Penguins their first 3-pointer of the game on their first possession, also giving Dominican its first lead of the evening.
Freshman
Alaiyah San Juan spotted a streaking
Jordan Charlton on a fast break after a Hawks basket tied the game, dishing her the ball before she laid in an easy bucket for her first score. Cedeno again showed her prowess a pair of possessions later, stealing the ball before sending another gift into the hands of Charlton who notched another easy layup, setting the score to 7-4.
Graduate student
Riley Friauf netted her first points of the game after becoming the recipient of Charlton pass, later followed by a Holy Names offensive turnover that led to a deep 2-pointer courtesy of graduate student
Abreanna Lake. The nifty next Penguins play saw Charlton finding Lake who was sprinting as she found her position inside the key before quickly dishing it to the corner and setting up another Cedeno three, forcing a Hawks timeout.
San Juan kept the rain coming with her first 3-pointer of the night, immediately followed by a Cedeno steal that eventually saw Friauf converting on a charity shot. Cedeno stacked on another bucket on the Penguins' next possession, preceding yet another Penguin steal before senior
Camryn Figueroa buried an open lay-in. Hawks free throws would then end Dominican's 20-0 run as the scoreboard read 24-6 in favor of Dominican. Holy Names tacked on another point before the end of the quarter but it was the Penguins who controlled the first frame, leading 24-7 after the opening frame.
"Shooters shoot," Cedeno said. "I was really hyped when I hit that first shot. It's my first game back in a while, so I wanted to get back into the flow of things."
Holy Names scored its fifth consecutive points off a bucket from in-close to start the next stanza, but sophomore
Ysobelle Eustaquio put an end to the mini-run with a bucket off the board. Eustaquio stole the ball on the Hawks' next trip down the floor, then sending it up-court to Cedeno who underhanded it Friauf under the rim who scored a trio of points off an and-1.
Friauf collected her 10
th and 11
th points of the game off a quick left-hander after junior
Maiya Flores sent the ball her way, bringing the score to 32-9. San Juan played gift-giver on Dominican's next possession, sending a floater into Friauf's hands who again laid the ball in. Flores joined the party with her first bucket, preceding a Hawks turnover that eventually led to a Dominican timeout.
Charlton buried another Dominican long ball after the teams retook the court, then blocking a Hawks shot from beyond the arc and setting up a Cedeno 3-pointer. Cedeno tip-toed the line before sinking another 3-pointer before Friauf muscled in a bucket from under the rim as the scoreboard read 51-13 in favor of the Penguins.
A Hawks free throw put Holy Names back on the board, but Dominican kept pouring it on as Flores followed in the footsteps of her peers by giving Dominican another triple. Cedeno tallied a block on the Hawks next trip down the floor, paving the way for a successful Figueroa free throw. Holy Names put up a trio of points before the end of the half, but the success was only a fraction of what was required as the Penguins marched into the locker rooms with a lopsided 55-17 advantage.
Similar to the first half, Cedeno started the scoring for Dominican in the second half with a lay-in after a Friauf feed, followed by a Dominican steal that led to Charlton free throws. Chartlon's name again rang over the Conlan Center speakers on Dominican's next possession when she sank a deep ball after a San Juan swing pass, giving Dominican a 62-17 lead. Back-to-back errant inbounds lead to back-to-back Dominican buckets as the Penguins continued to add relentless pressure, forcing a timeout by the Hawks.
Tickets to the Flores show sold out as the junior converted on buckets in three straight possessions, with her last bucket coming from an emphatic layup that saw her sliding across the floor as the ball found its way through the twine, giving her 14 on the night with 15 minutes of play remaining.
Flores continued to pour it on as she later notched another 3-pointer to give her 20 points and counting while Dominican continued to apply the pressure. Much of the bench saw playing time in the latter parts of third quarter as the team continued to roll, leading 96-27 as Flores continued to ride the hot hand as she buried another 3-pointer and a pair of free throws before the horn sounded.
"I haven't been shooting at my highest potential this season, but I've been practicing after practice every day just trying to get my confidence back. Tonight I got my confidence back, for sure," Flores said.
Jazmine Soto started the scoring in the final frame for the Hawks when she converted on Holy Names' second possession, but Dominican soon answered with a run that was highlighted by points from redshirt junior
Ashley Massell after freshman Elle Jiminez gathered the rebound before sending it Flores who garnered an assist on the play.
The Conlan Center lost its roof with less than five minutes remaining when Jiminez found her own rebound before collecting a pair of points off the put back, sending the facility into a frenzy as the fan favorite put points on the board. Flores kept the roof off the building when she connected on her 30
th point of the night, again from beyond the arc, helping Dominican gain a 109-38 advantage.
Freshman Riley Sarasua put herself on the stat sheet after seeing success from the foul line, followed by Jiminez notching another bucket and free throw. Eustaquio tallied the last Penguin points as Dominican's record setting night ended with a 114-40 victory.
Dominican tied its lowest amount of points given up in NCAA history in addition to setting a school record for largest margin of victory, allowing just 40 points while holding Holy Names to just 19.2% shooting from the field.
Flores led all scorers with 30 points, also adding seven rebounds and four assists while shooting an astonishing 71% from the field. Friauf, Cedeno and Charlton all collected double digit point totals with 19, 16 and 14 points, respectively, with Friauf finishing as the rebound leader with eight.
