SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Seniors
Tanya Bills and
Jaqueline Catano led the Penguins to their second victory of the week opening Pacific West Conference play with a 1-0 shutout of Fresno Pacific at Kennelly Field.
Shots were even between the teams, but the Penguins (2-2-2, 1-0-0 PacWest) held the 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Bills finished with three shots including her second goal in as many games, while Catano collected two saves in her fourth shutout of the season.
Bills pressured the Sunbirds' (0-7-0, 0-2-0 PacWest) backline early as she had a shot in the middle of the box miss just high in the second minute. Just seconds later
Cassidy Marquez took a ball from the FPU defense and chipped it ahead to Bills who chested it down and went back post for the 1-0 lead in the third minute.
The Sunbirds Makayla Montero had the best scoring opportunity of the day in the 10th minute as she got free in the box and tried to turn and shoot a ball to the back post but went just wide of the post. Kaila Takai then had another opportunity at the equalizer in the 37th minute but her right-footed shot went off the right post and the Penguins took the lead into halftime.
FPU pressured to begin the second half but Dominican's backline stood strong in front of Catano making sure shots were blocked or passes redirected before they could reach the keeper. It was not until the 84th minute that either team had a quality opportunity as sophomore defender
Eryn Tufts took a free kick near midfield and put a shot high on net that Sunbird keeper Brigitta Eggertsdottir pushed into the crossbar. Sophomore forward
Danielle Gonzalez followed it up with a shot off the rebound that went right into the hands of Eggertsdottir.
Dominican will hit the road to take on UC Santa Cruz at UCSC Soccer Complex on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PDT.
