SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Senior forward
Tanya Bills continued her torrid scoring leading Dominican women's soccer to a 2-2 tie Tuesday with UC Santa Cruz at UCSC Soccer Complex.
Bills recorded a brace and has now scored four goals for the Penguins (2-2-3) in the last three games. Senior goalkeeper
Jaqueline Catano made five saves on the day for Dominican.
The Banana Slugs (2-7-2) struck first as Fiona Nielsen took a free-kick and Katie Herm deflected it in front of the goal where it took a favorable deflection of the crossbar and bounced behind the goal line to take the 1-0 lead in the second minute. The Penguins pushed quickly for the equalizer tallying the next five shots over the next 17 minutes, but they were unable to find the equalizer. Senior midfielder
Sofia Odron found Bills free in the 33rd minute and Bills blasted the ball from 25-yards out, putting it above the keeper for the equalizer.
Sophomore defender
Eryn Tufts had one more chance for Dominican to pull ahead before the half but her shot high on frame was grabbed by UCSC's Alyssa Tucker to keep the game tied at the break.
After trading shots to open the second half, Bills once again got loose for the Penguins and beat Tucker to the lower right portion of the goal to take the 2-1 lead in the 54th minute. Fortune favored the Banana Slugs as, despite struggles to shoot the ball, Dominican had an own goal in the 64th minute that tied the game.
Odron and Bills each had chances at the game-winner in the final 10 minutes of regulation but Tucker made the saves necessary to send the game to overtime. In the extra time, UCSC's Katie Herm had the only shot on frame for either team, but Catano was there to make the save and preserve the tie.
Dominican will return to the pitch Sunday to take on University of Hawaii at Hilo at noon PDT at Kennelly Field.
