SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer broke out of a scoring slump to claim a 2-0 victory Monday afternoon over Holy Names at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (1-2-2) dominated the pace of play as they held a 22-4 advantage in shots with a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. Junior forward
Tanya Bills recorded the sixth goal of her Dominican career, while senior midfielder
Sofia Odron added the second goal of her career.
The Penguins pressed the attack early and often as they had five shots and three corner kicks in the first 25 minutes of the game, but the back of the net alluded them. In the 27th, minute
Carmi Dotario took a ball down the right flank, muscled past her defender and crossed a ball to Bills at the top of the box who put the ball into the back netting for the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks (0-7) recorded their first shot of the game in the 36th minute with their best scoring opportunity coming the 42nd minute off a corner kick, but senior goalkeeper
Jaqueline Catano leapt high to grab the save and preserve the shutout.
Odron found her spots several times in the second half with two quality chances in the first five minutes, but it was in the 65th minute that she had a ball played directly to her feet by the Holy Names keeper when she broke through with a goal to the far post to double the lead. The Penguins continued to dominate the possession conceding no shots and one corner over the final 25 minutes of play.
Dominican will return to the pitch Thursday to take on Fresno Pacific at 1 p.m. PDT to open Pacific West Conference play at Kennelly Field.
