Penguins fall to Gators

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 Wednesday in a tightly contested match with San Francisco State at Kennelly Field.

The Gators (2-4) were buoyed by Uki Fujiwara's goal and an assist from Nicki Friedman. SFSU had a narrow 11-7 advantage on shots and a 7-5 advantage of shots on frame for the match. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Gonzalez led the Penguins (0-2-2) with two shots and one on frame.

The Gators were the early aggressor as they collected five shots on goal in the opening 16 minutes, but senior goalkeeper Jaqueline Catano made sure none of them crossed the goal line with several diving saves. Gonzalez finally got some momentum going Dominican's way as she found some room at the top of the box to challenge Marcella Salyer, but Salyer made the save for the Gators in the 17th minute.

The teams traded possession for the next 20 minutes when senior forward Katie Bianchi had the best scoring opportunity of the afternoon as she was one-on-one with the keeper in the middle of the box, but Salyer made the save on her attempt to keep the match scoreless at the half.

Fujiwara found the breakthrough goal in the 60th minute when Friedman found her in the middle of the box and she beat Catano to the far post for the 1-0 lead. The teams continued their battle in the midfield over the final 30 minutes, but Dominican was unable to find the equalizer.

The Penguins will return to action Monday as it takes on Holy Names in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
