Though being outshot 18 to 11 by the Seawolves, Dominican made the most of its opportunities by burying goals on half its shots that found the target. Garcia and junior Christopher Berrios lead the way for the Penguins with two shots apiece, while junior
Ryan Garvey lead in the minutes column by seeing all but just four minutes of the total action. Senior goalkeeper
Ruben Raygoza sealed the victory for Dominican by keeping all six shots that found the target off the twine, earning him his first shutout of the season.
Garcia's goal came early for Dominican, with the Penguins' midfielder needing just over five minutes to ripple the mesh as he directed a shot far post past the outreaching fingertips of the Sonoma State goalkeeper. The teams traded shots and yellow cards over the ensuing 30 minutes with a large portion of Raygoza's workload between the pipes coming during this time, but the score stayed idle as the Penguins marched into halftime enjoying a 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Alexandre Bernier welcomed the Seawolves defense back to the field with a shot the narrowly missed the right post to start the second half, an attack that was quickly countered by a pair of Seawolves chances that would be to no avail. It wasn't until the 77th minute before Dominican would find the insurance it needed in the form of a Morazan tally on a cross by Verdote over the defense to the far post, doubling Dominican's lead with time winding down. Sonoma State gave a strong last-ditch effort in the final minutes with a pair of shots to challenge Raygoza, but the senior was up to the task as he solidified the victory for Dominican with a pair of saves off strikes that were directed towards the bottom left and right corners, respectively.
Dominican now looks ahead to Saturday when it welcomes Menlo to the Kennelly Field at 3:30 p.m. PDT.
