Blakely's brace buoys Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Cali. – Junior forward Joe Blakely recorded a brace to lead Dominican men's soccer to a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon over Menlo College at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (4-0-1) outshot the Oaks (3-4-0) 14-8 with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Aboubacar Cisse added a goal and an assist on the day for Dominican.

The Penguins got off to a strong start maintaining possession for long stretches of the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore defender Andrew Parshall placed a ball perfectly to Blakely off a corner and Blakely headed the ball inside the back post to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Senior midfielder Dylan Finley stole the ball in the backfield 16 minutes later and passed it up to Alexandre Bernier who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot missed just wide of the goal post. Minutes later, Cisse took a ball near the right sideline and switched the field to Bernier who deked out a defender and crossed the ball to Blakely in the middle of the box for the 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

Dominican kept the momentum rolling in the second half as Roberto Garcia took the ball away in the 60th minute and passed it up to Cisse, who put a shot on frame which was then deflected by an Oaks defender into the back netting as they hopelessly tried to clear the ball before it crossed the backline to make it 3-0. The Penguins made several late substitutions and the Oaks capitalized on the reserves scoring two goals in the closing minutes of the game, but Dominican held on for the victory.

The Penguins return to the pitch Monday to take on San Francisco State at 1 p.m. PDT at Cox Stadium.
