Penguins split with Hawks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Junior pitcher Kathryn Caravalho pitched a complete game shutout to help Dominican Softball split a Saturday doubleheader with Holy Names at Penguin Field. The Hawks won the first game 4-3 with the Penguins taking the second 2-0.

Sophomore shortstop Lauren Lapinid led Dominican (11-9, 10-6 PacWest) at the plate batting .333 on the day with a double, a run and an RBI. Caravalho limited HNU to five base runners on the day to go with three strikeouts as she moved to 6-5 on the season.

Game One
The first game was a seesaw battle between the teams as HNU got on the board first when Cienna Cheshier homered to left field to take the 1-0 lead in the second. Senior second baseman Mady Christensen then singled to right center in the bottom of the frame and sophomore catcher Celeste Salas doubled to deep center to bring her home to tie the game.

Dominican looked to take the lead in the bottom of the third as senior utility Alyssa Waltman singled down the right-field line and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After sophomore outfielder Peyton Mott singled to shallow center field on the next at bat, Waltman was caught off the base at third and the Hawks escaped the jam.

In the top of the fourth, Bailey Correia singled up the middle and Cheshier followed with a double to bring her home for the 2-1 lead. The Penguins left Cheshier stranded at third with a groundout to senior Alyssa Ramirez at third and Lapinid then snagged a line drive to end the inning. The Hawks looked to extend the lead in the top of the fifth as Cassidy Simon singled and stole second with two outs, but Mott scooped up a single and threw a bullet to the plate to catch her at home for the third out.

Lapinid doubled to center on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the sixth and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Salas then laid down a perfect squeeze punt with two strikes to bring her in for the 2-2 tie.

HNU was able to load the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a double in the top of the seventh and Haighley Kissee was able to cash in with an infield single to score two and retake the 4-2 lead. Ramirez brought one runner in with a double to center in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but the comeback fell short as a fly out to right field ended the Penguins hope.

Game two
The game began as a pitching duel with neither pitcher allowing a hit in the first three innings. Lyndsey Widner was the first player to record a hit with a single up the middle in the top of the fourth, but Caravalho left the runner stranded with a pair of soft groundouts ending the inning.

Ramirez then reached safely on a muffed catch at first in the bottom of the fourth and Lapinid roped a 2-out single to center to bring her home for the first run of the game. Lapinid came home as an errant throw by HNU pitcher Kelsey Volkmar went into the dugout to extend the lead to 2-0 heading to the fifth.

The Hawks managed to put runners on in the last three innings, but only one reached scoring position as Caravalho efficiently maneuvered her way to the shutout.

Dominican will return to the diamond Friday with a doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene and Concordia University Irvine at Penguin Field. Live coverage information will be available on our schedule page.
