No. 14 Concordia Irvine University and Northwest Nazarene University visited Dominican University on Friday, both earning wins over the Penguin on day one of a two-day mini series between the three teams.
Game One
Dominican fell 2-0 against Northwest Nazarene in the first game of the weekend, registering just four hits in the game. Junior Kathryn Carvalho threw an impressive outing for the Penguins, allowing six hits while being taxed with just one earned run through seven innings.
Reigning Player of the Week
Alyssa Ramirez kept her hot streak alive in game one, going 2 of 3 at the plate while breaking up a way-too-early no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle. Junior
Peyton Mott and Senior
Alyssa Waltman were the only other Penguins to register hits in the first game of the mini-series as strong pitching set the early tone for Northwest Nazarane.
The Nighthawks first run came in the second inning after a pair of Penguin errors allowed Northwest Nazarene to prolong the inning. The second of two errors came after a ground ball was bobbled at third base, allowing a Tori Hensley to score while Madison Strickler safely reached first base. The final run of the game came after the Nighthawks successfully reached the bags on back-to-back hits before a Brittany Genuardi sacrifice fly brought home Emma Mulligan.
Game Two
Concordia Irvine put up double digits against the Penguins, enjoying a 10-0 win courtesy of a slew of extra base hits. Sophomore
Shelby Keltner gave up six runs through 5.1 innings of work, while Mott, Waltman and senior Vanessa Portman were the only Penguins to tally hits in the Penguins final Friday game.
Keltner was dealing early on, allowing just two hits through the first three innings as she battled with the Eagles' Callie Nunes. A Syndey Dix triple brought home Missy Nemeth to score the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning before scoring just one batter later on a successful bunt. The floodgates opened for the Eagles two innings later when Marisa Stockton tallied a grand slam, putting the finishing touches on what would end as a six run inning. The Eagles would add a pair in the top of the seven, leading them to a decisive 10-0 victory.
The Penguins will take the field again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. when they complete the three teams complete the mini series.
