SURPRISE, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 4-0 Wednesday to No. 25 Fresno Pacific in its opening match of the 2021 PacWest Women's Tennis Championships at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
Alice Marques and Daimy Paula got the Sunbirds (6-8) off to a strong start with a 6-2 victory over the Penguins' (1-11)
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Nicole Bermudez. Mariia Borodii and Leah Falentin added a 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles over
Amber Del Rosario and
Zoe Coggins of Dominican.
Haley Garcia and
Taylor Lim were locked in a close doubles match on court two trailing Sanne Brull and Alice Di Matteo 4-3 when the doubles point was decided.
Paula kept the momentum going for FPU with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 6 singles with Di Matteo adding a 6-0, 6-2 win of her own on court three. Falentin clinched the match for the Sunbirds in No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over
Kamar Alajeely. Del Rosario got off to a strong start for the Penguins in singles taking the first set 6-0, but the match was halted as FPU secured the clinching team point.
Dominican will close out its season Thursday against Chaminade at 5 p.m. MST at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
