Strong pitching, stalwart batting leads to sweep of HNU

Dominican University swept Holy Names University in an afternoon double header on Friday, earning a 9-0 win in game one (five innings) of the matchup, followed by a 6-2 victory in game two. Sophomore Shelby Keltner earned her fifth win of the season to improve to 5-4, while Kathryn Carvalho's second win improved her to 2-1.

Game One
The Penguins batted an astonishing .500 in game one, with four Penguins recording at least two hits.  Keltner cruised from the mound, needing only 72 total pitches through the five innings of work.

Dominican found the scoreboard in the teams' second appearance at the plate after a scoreless first inning. Bella Romani and Celeste Salas were both hit by pitches in consecutive at bats to place runners on first and second before a Vanessa Porto single advanced the runners and loaded the bases. A run would cross home plate on the next at bat as Alyssa Waltman hit a RBI single to center to advance all the runners a single base with Romani recording the run.

Peyton Mott set the tone for the Penguins in the next inning with a leadoff triple before being brought home by a Mady Christensen bunt just two hitters later. Romani hit a double to earn herself an RBI as Christensen waltzed across the plate, giving Dominican a 3-0 lead after three innings.

More Penguin help was on the way in the fourth inning as Dominican added two more runs to their already commanding lead as an Alyssa Ramirez double to left center brought home Porto who had previously reached base on a leadoff single. A Lauren Lapinid double brought Ramirez home to score the final run of the inning as Dominican was cruising with a 5-0 advantage after four.

Dominican would end the game in emphatic fashion as they scored four runs in the fifth inning to mercilessly apply the mercy rule on the Hawks, earning a 9-0 victory after five innings. The bases were soon loaded in the top of the fifth as Salas reached first on an error before Faith Erb reached second on a stolen base after being subbed in to pinch run for Salas.

Porto brought home Erb on the next at bat with a double to left center before stealing third and being brought home by a Waltman single. Ramirez and Mott would both earn RBI doubles before the end of the inning to put the nail in the coffin for game one.
Keltner made quick work of the Hawks in game one, allowing just three hits through five innings of near flawless work. The sophomore struck out nine batters through the five innings, walking just one batter while owning a 0.736 strike percentage.

Game Two
The Hawks earned the first run of the day in game two, their first of just two runs on the afternoon, as Lyndsey Widner would eventually be brought home after being hit by a pitch to leadoff the game.

Dominican wouldn't allow HNU to hold a lead for long as a trio of second inning runs gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Salas singled to center followed a Romani walk to put two runners on before a Mckenna Daley single loaded the bases. A Waltman walk brought in a run before a Ramirez two RBI single game Dominican its two-run advantage.

Salas walked to start the third inning before Daley hit her home with a single to center, increasing Dominican's lead to 4-1. A Peyton Mott RBI single gave Dominican its fifth run of the game before she earned another RBI in the top of the fifth.

The Hawks comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh came up short as they tallied just one run, giving Dominican a 6-2 victory. Mott and Ramirez both finished with a pair of RBI's while both of them, combined with Salas and Daley, earned at least two hits.

Dominican now looks ahead to Saturday when it takes on Holy Names in their second double header of the weekend.
