Dominican University was bested by the Academy of Art on Tuesday, falling 80-75 in overtime.
Romeo Mays scored Dominican's first seven points of the game, but the Penguins first lead wouldn't come until the halfway point of the opening half after Mays converted on a layup. The two teams would trade baskets for the ensuing minutes before a trio of buckets from Mays,
Jaelen Ragsdale and
Chase Anderson gave Dominican a quick 7-0 run and a 24-17 advantage. The Penguins lead wouldn't grow larger than seven as the Urban Knights closed the gap late in the half, but it was Dominican that took the lead into the locker rooms after Anderson converted on a short-range jumper that gave the Penguins a 36-33 lead at the half.
Jordan Williams buried the first Dominican field goal of the final frame, but a Stefan Milivojevic deep ball brought the game back even as the Penguins struggled to convert on shots early in the second half. Chris Williams hit a 3-pointer with 13:40 remaining in the game after Dominican had scored only four points over the opening six minutes of the half. Baskets started to fall for Dominican as the Penguings went on to score 11-points over the next three minutes following the Chris Williams 3-pointer, holding onto a 51-46 lead.
Dominican would see itself with an 8-point lead with 8:13 remaining, but the Urban Knights took exception and delivered a 9-0 run over the ensuing 3:12, giving them a 59-58 lead. The teams swapped baskets over the ensuing four minutes before Dominican jumped out to a 5-point lead with just 1:37 seconds remaining in the contest. A Joshua Bagley jumper was combined with a Jalen Lovett 3-pointer on the next two Academy of Art possessions to tie the game at 67 points apiece, forcing overtime.
The Urban Knights jumped out to a five-point lead in the extra frame, a lead that proved to be enough as the Academy of Art walked away with an 80-75 overtime win over Dominican. Mays led the way for the Penguins with a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double while both Chris Williams and Jaelan Ragsdale also earned double-digits for Dominican, scoring 15 points each. Ragsdale added six steals to his stat line, also dishing a team-high four assists while Mays added a game-high four blocks.
Dominican will return to the hardwood on Friday to play its fourth of five consecutive games against Art University before playing its final game against the Urban Knights on Saturday
