Zoe Coggins claimed her first career singles victory against an NCAA Division II opponent for Dominican women's tennis in a 6-1 loss to Academy of Art Saturday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Coggins fended off Aitana Comas Adam in the first set with a narrow 7-6 victory, but Adam bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the second set to force a tiebreaker. Coggins shook off the defeat in the tiebreaker with a 10-6 victory to become the first Dominican tennis player to claim a singles victory over an Urban Knight (1-0) since
Savannah Gray in 2018.
ART U claimed doubles with a 6-0 victory by Erica Hellbe and Adam with Julia Ortega and Maria Casucci claiming the 6-3 victory on court three to claim the team point. The Urban Knights continued their strong start in singles with Yun Shiau scoring a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 2 singles, while Sofia Ragona won the top court 6-1, 6-0. Casucci scored the match clincher on court three with a 6-2, 6-0 victory for Academy of Art.
Dominican will return to the court Saturday to take on Santa Clara a NCAA Division I opponent at a time to be determined.
