LA MIRADA, Calif. — A pair of second-half goals proved to be the difference as Biola earned a crucial three points to help lift them 2-1 over Domincian men's soccer.
Penguins senior keeper
Ruben Raygoza was tested early when Biola's Adam Jones sent a strike towards the bottom right-90 in the second minute, but Raygoza was up to the task to keep the two squads scoreless early on. The two teams traded shots over the ensuing 10 minutes with the Penguins' only shot on target of the half coming off the foot of senior
Roberto Garcia, a shot that was saved by Eagles' keeper JD Gunn.
Biola continued to test Raygoza throughout the first half, sending 12 shots in the direction of the Dominican keeper with five finding the target, but Raygoza turned in a clean sheet in the initial frame of the game. A strong defensive effort came in 41st minute when Biola's Malik Shaheed sent a missile from in-close that was blocked by a diving
Cameron Baca that helped keep the two teams knotted at zero.
Biola broke the tie early in the final frame, a goal that came off the foot of Theo Le Calve after he received a pass from Daniel Simonis, streaked down the left-side and sent a shot on goal from a sharp angle, finally finding a way to beat Raygoza and earn the lead. Dominican found its urgency after the goal, spending a large portion of the following 15 minutes on Biola's side of the field, capped off by a
Dominic Gallettii shot that was tipped over the net by the Eagles' Gunn.
The Penguins tied the game in the 72nd minute when a free-kick was given after an Izaac Zausch foul, with the foul being committed just outside the Eagles' box. Senior
Brian Sanchez sent a chip into the box off the free-kick that found the head of senior
Eddie Silverbush who made no mistake as the ball rippled the twine and brought the teams even at 1-1.
The celebration had barely begun when Biola regained the lead just 25 seconds later when Shaheed sent a shot towards the middle of the goal from outside the box that found a way over the outstretched arm of Raygoza, giving the Eagles back their one-goal lead.
Dominican sent a flurry of shots towards the Biola goalkeeper in the final 15 minutes of the game, with freshman
Alexandre Bernier and junior
Joe Blakely both finding the target, but Gunn stood tall and secured the 2-1 victory for Biola.
Silverbush lead the way for all Penguins shooters, sending four shots towards the net, with Garcia notching three shots. Raygoza finished the match with six saves on eight total shots.
Dominican will regroup on Sunday before hitting the pitch for its final match of the road trip on Monday, Nov. 8 when it takes on Point Loma in San Diego.
