Late goals lift Sea Lions over Penguins

SAN DIEGO – Dominican men's soccer was unable to hold a late lead as Point Loma Nazarene University scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to take a 3-2 victory at PLNU Soccer Field.

Junior forward Joe Blakely scored his fourth goal of the season while junior midfielder Chris Barrios added his second of the year for the Penguins. Freshman midfielder Diego Grande had assists on both goals bringing his season total to five. Parker Scalzo's brace proved the difference with both of his goals coming in the final 10 minutes for the Sea Lions.

The game began at a high pace for both teams much like it had in the October contest that was halted at the half. PLNU was the first to create a great opportunity as Townsend Meyer bodied up a defender in the box before passing a ball back out to the top where Teague Anderson immediately rifled a shot inside the left post for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Dominican wasted no time responding as Grande took a ball into the right side of the box and crossed it across the face of goal to Blakely who settled the ball and easily poked the ball into the back netting for the equalizer in the 19th minute.

The teams traded several near chances in the second half but the Dominican defense fell back and limited the Sea Lions to just one opportunity on goal in the 63rd minute as senior goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza turned aside Nick Eusebio's shot. In the 77th minute, Grande was played into space along the right flank by senior defender Ryan Garvey and pushed his advantage deep into the box where the Sea Lions forced him to turn away from the goal. Grande though spotted Barrios at the top of the box and pushed the ball to him where Barrios loosed a shot that ricocheted off the left post and into the netting for the 2-1 lead.

James Hill took a ball down the left side for PLNU in the 84th minute and crossed a ball across the face of goal where some miscommunication allowed the ball to make it to the foot of Scalzo. Scalzo poked the ball toward the backline and Raygoza gave chase but was unable to stop it before it crossed for the 2-2 tie. Scalzo then gave PLNU the lead three minutes later putting a ball into the upper right 90 off a pass from Austen Lavell.

Dominican will return home Thursday to take on Academy of Art at 2 p.m. PST for Senior Day at Kennelly Field.
