Friauf, Charlton combine for big afternoon as Dominican downs Monterrey Bay

San Francisco, Calif. — Senior Jordan Charlton scored a career-high 15 points, shattering her previous record of eight points, while graduate student Riley Friauf added another 20-piece to help give Dominican University of California a 63-58 victory of Cal State Monterrey Bay.

The story of the game was the relentless full-court pressure that Dominican placed on Monterrey Bay from start to finish, recording 18 total steals as a team. The Penguins' 18 steals are good enough for seventh most all-time by the program, tying the 18 steals that Dominican had against Sonoma State on Nov. 11, 2017. Dominican proceeded to also score 32 points off those 18 turnovers.

Senior Errayanna Hatfield started the scoring for Dominican with a 3-pointer, one of just three long-balls recorded by Dominican on the afternoon. Graduate student Abreanna Lake recorded her first points on the afternoon off a fast break before running the same play back just moments later, giving Dominican a 7-6 lead. A Friauf free-throw and layup were followed-up by a Hatfield jumper to Dominican a 12-6 lead off a 7-0 run. A basket with 55 seconds left in the first frame brought the otters within one, but senior Camryn Figueroa helped Dominican reestablish its 6-point lead with a jumper before the horn.

Five consecutive points eventually helped the Otters tie the game at 17-17 early in the second quarter, with Friauf and Charlton hitting consecutive jumpers to help Dominican answer the Monterrey Bay attack. The Otters provided another quick response with baskets on back-to-back trips down the floor before sophomore Ysobelle Eustaquio nailed a 3-pointer to give Dominican a 24-21 advantage. The horn sounded 90 seconds later, with the Otters accumulating a pair of points in that time, leading to a 24-23 Penguin advantage at halftime.

Lake welcomed the foes back to the floor with a scoop and score, stealing the ball before driving to the hoop to give Dominican a 26-23 lead after the first possession of the half. Hatfield did her best Lake impression a minute later when she stole the ball and dished it off to Charlton who made no mistake, helping Domnican fetch a 28-24 lead. Charlton and Friauf traded baskets with one another halfway through the third quarter to keep Dominican's 4-point pace, but the Otters knotted the game at 30-30 after a pair of baskets of their own.

Dominican embarked on a 13-2 run from this point, with Friauf, Charlton, Hatfield and junior Alessandra Salise all contributing points, but a late push by Monterrey Bay lessened the Dominican lead to 49-43 by the end of the third quarter.

A Lauryn Pointer jumper kick started the final frame for the Otters, but Charlton answered the bell with seven consecutive Dominican points to increase its lead to seven. Freshman Alaiyah San Juan added a pair of Penguin points with 5:54 left in the game, followed by a Hatfield jumper to establish a double-digit 60-50 Penguin lead. The teams traded single baskets before Monterrey Bay went on a 6-0 in one last effort to tie the game, but the Penguin press was too much for the Otters to handle as Dominican recorded its 16th, 17th and 18th steals over a 90-second span to secure a 63-58 victory.

Charlton's final stat line read 15 points, one steal and four assists while Friauf boasted 20 points, four steals, six assists and five rebounds. Lake led all players with five steals, while Hatfield and San Juan both added six assists for Dominican.
