Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Aaron Fitzner

San Juan's career evening not enough as Gators top Penguins

Another game meant another Riley Friauf double-double as she posted 21 points and 18 assists while freshman Alaiyah San Juan recorded a career-high 23 points on 5 of 8 shooting from deep, but the strong stat lines weren't enough as Dominican University women's basketball fell 76-74 to San Francisco State University on Saturday.

San Juan got her party started early as she drained Dominican opening six points on the afternoon, while Friauf and graduate student Abreanna Lake eventually joined her party to give Dominican a 10-7 lead halfway through the first frame. A San Juan 3-pointer have Dominican a six-point advantage moments later, but a 6-0 Gators run knotted the game at 13-13.

Another long-ball, this time from freshman Alessandra Salise, helped Dominican get back on its feet before Salise nailed a jumper on the next trip down the floor, helping Dominican to a 5-point advantage. Ashley Hart converted on a basket from inside the paint for the Gators as time was expiring, bringing the score to 18-15 after the introductory stanza.

Hart converted on a layup on the Gators' first trip down the floor in the second half to bring the Gators within one, but Friauf soon answered with a layup before San Juan drained another deep ball. Freshman Jazmine Barnes got in on the action with a jumper from in-close to give the Penguins an eight-point advantage before the teams started to trade buckets.

Dominican went on a slew of mini-runs to eventually lead by as many as 13 with 3:06 to go in the half, but the Gators brought the lead back to single-digits after Mya Blake tallied a short jumper. San Juan left another mark on the scoresheet with just six seconds remaining, nailed another 3-pointer as she helped Dominican waltz into halftime with a 12-point lead.

Senior Jordan Charlton welcome the foes back to the floor with a fastbreak jumper in the paint to help the Penguins to their game-high 14-point lead, but San Francisco State started to hack away at the lead, eventually seeing itself down by five with just under six minutes remaining in the quarter.

A Barnes 3-pointer preceded a Friauf jumper to give Dominican back its double-digit lead, but another the Gators axed another lead after a 7-0 run brought the score to 53-50 for the Penguins. Another Gators run, this time an 8-0 streak, gave San Francisco State its first lead since the early moments of the opening quarter with the score reading 58-56. By the end of the third frame, Friauf added a trio of points to her stat line as Dominican saw itself trailing 60-59.

Friauf converted on a pair of free throws soon after the start of the final frame to give Dominican a one-point advantage before the two squads exchanged baskets for the ensuing three minutes. Salise brought the game even at 73-73 with 91 seconds remaining on the clock, but a pair of Gator free throws established a two-point lead once again.

Dominican was able to pull within one after a Salise free throw, but ultimately dropped the decision after a missed jumper as time expired.

The Penguins will now look ahead to their evening matchup at home against Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 5:30 p.m. PST.
