San Rafael, Calif. -- Senior Riley Fraiuf led the way for the Penguins once again, recording a double-double on 22 points and 14 rebounds, while freshman
Jazmine Barnes turned in the game of her dreams with 15 points and five impactful steals as the Dominican University women's basketball team record a 72-70 victory over Humboldt State University.
"Jazz (Barnes) and a lot of freshman are getting a lot more comfortable being at this level, so each game we are getting better and better as we keep working together."
Sharon Roldan converted on the introductory basket of the game with a driving layup for Humboldt State before Friauf played deja vu with a layup of her own on Dominican's returning trip down the court. Senior
Errayanna Hatfield made the third of three consecutive layups to give Dominican a two-point lead, immediately followed by a
Jordan Charlton jumper to give the Penguins a four-point lead.
A pair of Friauf 3-pointer gave Dominican a 15-10 advantage with 1:40 left in the opening frame before she converted on a layup to finish the scoring in the first quarter, with Dominican admiring the 18-13 difference on the score clock.
Madison Parry came out firing for the Lumberjacks, draining a 3-pointer on the teams' first trip down the floor in the second stanza. Freshman
Alaiyah San Juan converted on a pair of free throws to bring the score to 22-18, but Humboldt State provided a quick answer in the form of a Citlaly Davalos jumper just 25 seconds later.
The combatants traded baskets before Julia Iman notched a Humboldt State 3-pointer at the 3:56 mark of the second quarter, but Barnes wasted no time in answering the basket with a short jumper, bringing the score to 26-23. After shots from the charity stripe were traded between the two teams, Mariah Baraza drained a deep ball to bring the score even at 27-27. A pair of layups from senior
Camryn Figueroa and Friauf gave Dominican a 31-27 lead, but Humboldt State battled back to eventually tie the game, bringing the score even at 38-38.
With time winding down on the clock and the Penguins full-court press in full force, Barnes made a clutch steal before driving to the basket for a pair of Penguin points that would prove to be the difference in the first half, giving Dominican back the momentum and the lead, with the score reading 40-38.
"I'm a stronger than a lot of guards, so being able to get to the rim and finish is one of the ways I can always help the team," Barnes said.
A Charlton layup welcomed the teams back to the court while also giving the Penguins a 42-38 lead, kick-starting a 6-0 Dominican run. Peralta halted the Penguin pounce with a layup to bring the score to 46-40, but Dominican again had the answer with Barnes hitting a mid-range jumper.
Dominican stretched its lead to nine after Friauf converted on a layup with 4:09 to go, a lead that would shrink to five by the end of the third quarter.
A pair of
Abreanna Lake free throws increased Dominican's lead to seven before another Barnes basket reestablished Dominican's nine-point advantage. Humboldt State cued the comeback after a pair of free throws and a Madison Parry jumper, bring the score to 58-53 with 7:19 remaining, before San Juan did her best to distance Dominican with a 2-point jumper.
Humboldt State drew within one with 4:35 remaining when Davalos converted on her driving layup to bring the score to 61-60. Barnes contributed another pair of points to give Dominican a three point advantage before a slew of Dominican charity shots made the score read 67-61.
Barnes' pressure forced another turnover before Humboldt State sent Friauf back to the line, preceding a perfect 2-for-2 trip to the stripe to give Dominican a 69-61 advantage. Humboldt State stormed back in the final minute, bringing the score within five after a burst of abnormal plays left the play clock and the teams confused. After referee deliberation, Peralta was set to the line for a trio of shots, draining all three to bring the score to 72-70 with 0.3 seconds left on the clock. The ensuing Dominican throw-in drained any and all remaining time off the clock. Handing Dominican the 72-70 win.
Dominican now looks ahead to Friday, Nov. 19 when it takes on Cal State Monterey Bay in San Francisco at 1 p.m.
