Penguins fall to Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 3-0 Sunday afternoon to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at Kennelly Field.

Filippa Graneld led the Vulcans (7-3-0, 4-1-0 PacWest) with a goal and an assist on the day. UHH also outshot the Penguins (2-3-3, 1-1-0 PacWest) 16-9 with a 9-5 advantage in shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Maler entered in the second half and made four saves to keep the Vulcans from adding to their goal differential.

Dominican got some good early pressure and sophomore defender Eryn Tufts was able to put a high shot on frame, but Vivianna Poli made the save to keep the game level in the 12th minute. Daelenn Tokunaga took a through ball from Nanea Wall and held a defender on her hip while she beat the keeper far post to give the Vulcans a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.

The Penguins were quick on the counter as Danielle Gonzalez was able to free herself at the top of the box, but she mishit the chance and Poli was able to make the save. Graneld then helped UHH double its lead as she found Alyssa Padron at the top of the box and she put the ball in the back netting in the 28th minute.

Graneld kept the momentum going for the Vulcans in the second half as she chested down a clearance attempt and beat her defender before putting a left-footed shot past the keeper for the 3-0 lead. Senior forward Katie Bianchi had a pair of chances for the Penguins in the 53rd and 60th minute with the second being a deflection that ended up being pushed just over the crossbar by Poli. UHH then had several chances to add to their lead in the closing minutes, but Maler was there each time to make the save.

Dominican will be back in action Thursday as it travels to Southern California to take on Point Loma Nazarene University at noon PDT at PLNU Soccer Field.
