BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-20) Friday night to Academy of Art despite a great all-around performance from senior
Tiffany Wong at Walter Gleason Gymasium.
Wong recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 19 digs to go with two service aces for the Penguins (1-19, 1-10 PacWest). Freshman outside hitter
Devon Condie flirted with a triple-double finishing with eight kills, seven blocks and 10 digs, while senior outside hitter
Mariah Ahid added 10 kills and three blocks. Ashley Mecham paced the Urban Knights (6-14, 3-9 PacWest) with 19 kills and 17 digs.
After trading points to start the set, Dominican was able to find some separation with a 6-1 run sparked by a block from Condie and freshman middle
Ella Jimenez while Wong followed up with her first service ace of the night on the way to a 14-10 lead. ART U responded quickly as Katherine Von Kraut frustrated the Penguin offense collecting two blocks while also finding the floor on a pair of kills to lead a 13-1 run that gave it full control of the set and the Urban Knights took the 1-0 lead in the match.
Dominican took advantage of several ART U errors in the early part of the second set to take a 7-3 lead. Junior middle
Edee Leslie combined with Ahid for a block moments later to cap a 3-0 burst that extended the Penguins lead to six. Mecham gave the Urban Knights some momentum with a kill and a block for the next two points and the 5-2 run helped them cut the deficit to 13-10. The momentum was short-lived as Ahid had a kill and Condie and Jimenez combined for a block once again as a 3-point run extended the lead to 17-11. Dominican held on and Wong ended it as she found a weak spot in the ART U defense for her second ace of the night to tie the match 1-1.
The Penguins once again found the early separation in the third set as Wong bookended a 4-0 run with a pair of kills to take a 10-6 lead. The Urban Knights slowly chipped away at the lead with small runs and a kill by Von Kraut made it 13-12, but Condie rolled a ball over the ART U block to give Dominican back some momentum on a 3-0 run to stay in the lead. The Urban Knights refused to go away chipping away at the lead until they finally tied the match at 19-19. Jillian Wheaton then combined with Von Kraut for back-to-back kills to power a 3-point burst that gave them the 23-21 lead and they held on to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
ART U carried its momentum into the fourth set as it slowly build a lead and Mecham capped the sequence as she found the floor on a kill to take a 12-7 lead. After a Condie kill cut the lead back to three, Celena Davis put down a pair of kills in a 3-0 run to double the lead at 16-10. The Penguins battled back as Jimenez combined with Condie for one block then paired with Pelton for another to start a 6-1 run that cut the deficit to one and force an Urban Knight timeout. The timeout worked to slow the Dominican momentum and Mecham had a pair of kills to lead a 4-0 run to give ART U some breathing room down the stretch. The Penguins ran out of time as Wheaton went down the line to take the set 25-20 and clinch the match victory.
Dominican will return to the court Saturday as it travels south to take on Fresno Pacific at 3 p.m. PDT at the Special Events Center.
