Penguins fall to Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 Saturday afternoon to Fresno Pacific at the Special Events Center.

Senior Tiffany Wong continued her impressive play for the Penguins (1-20, 1-11 PacWest) with her second consecutive double-double, this time of 12 kills and 14 digs. The Sunbirds (6-17, 3-10 PacWest) were led by Corinne Acosta's 11 kills and 13 digs.

The first set opened with the teams trading runs and leads as freshman outside hitter Devon Condie found the floor on back-to-back kills to give Dominican the 14-12 lead near the midway point of the set. Corinne Acosta then sparked a 3-point burst for FPU with a kill as they retook a 17-16 lead. Makena Ogas then capped off a 5-1 run for the Sunbirds with an ace and a block to get to set point at 24-20, with Corinne Acosta converting on their third attempt with a kill to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Errors derailed the Penguins early in the second set as FPU took advantage in an 8-2 run that broke a tie set and gave the Sunbirds a 14-8 lead. Dominican battled back as junior setter Vanna Marquez spread the ball around to her pin hitters in a 5-1 run that closed the deficit to two. The momentum was short lived as FPU closed the match on another 8-2 run capped off by back-to-back aces from Catie Speas to clinch the 2-0 set lead.

Neither team could gain much separation in the early part of the third set until Speas sparked a 4-0 run with a kill and a pair of assists to give the Sunbirds a 16-12 lead. Dominican kept it close as senior libero Samantha Brown capped a 3-0 run with an ace to close the gap to one, but errors allowed FPU to pull away down the stretch for the 25-20 set victory.

Dominican will be back in action Monday as it takes on Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Recreation Center.
