Penguins miss opportunities in narrow loss to Sharks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer was unable to finish several quality chances in a 1-0 loss to Hawai'i Pacific University on Tuesday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (6-2-3, 1-2-2 PacWest) nearly doubled the Sharks (5-5-2, 3-1-2 PacWest) in shots with a 15-8 advantage and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, but Gabriel Stauring was able to get the only shot that crossed a goal line for either team.

Senior midfielder Roberto Garcia had an early chance at a go-ahead goal in the fourth minute as he bent a free kick around a wall and toward the back post, but Jeremy Zielinsky was there to make the diving save to his left to keep his net clean. Senior forward Dominic Galletti then found himself on a breakaway in the seventh minute going one-on-one with Zielinsky and he took the ball around him and sent a shot towards the open net, but the ball went wide left. HPU only managed two shots in the period as Dominican dominated the possession but the game went into the half tied 0-0.

Sebastian Navarro passed a ball ahead to Stauring on a counter-attack in the 60th minute and Stauring chipped a ball over the head of senior goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Dominican quickly pushed for a counter as Garcia once again had a great shot on a free kick, but Zielinsky made the jumping save to keep HPU in the lead in the 61st minute.

Dominican had one last attempt to tie the game in the 72nd minute as Galletti was taken down in the box to draw a penalty and senior midfielder Brian Sanchez stepped to the spot for the penalty. Sanchez fooled Zielinsky who dove right while Sanchez put the ball toward the left post, but the ball went just wide.

Dominican will return to the pitch Saturday to face Chaminade University at 3:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
