Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sensational overtime tally gives Dominican overtime victory

San Rafael, Calif. — Teamwork proved to make the dream work as freshman Diego Grande, senior Cameron Baca and senior Eddie Silverbush teamed-up to setup a sensational tally just 113 seconds into overtime as Dominican men's soccer secured a 2-1 victory over Chaminade University at Kennelly Field.

Silverbush found the stat sheet early and often, notching the first shot of the game – a strike that sailed over the crossbar — before being handed a yellow card all within the first eight minutes of the match. Senior Roberto Garcia was the first player on either team to find the target, sending a ball towards the bottom left of the target in the 11th minute, a shot that was turned aside by Chaminade keeper Brandon Yasue.

Garcia and Silverbush traded a trio of shots over the ensuing 10 minutes, none of which were able to find the target. Penguins senior keeper Ruben Raygoza faced his first strike in the 28th minute with a ball that was directed towards the bottom right corner, but he too was up to the task as the two teams found themselves knotted up at 0.

Sophomore midfielder Nick Van der Waart van Gulik sent a perfect pass over the heads of all the Silversword defenders and directly onto the foot of junior defender Louie Galdamez in the 31st minute, but Yasue again steered the strike aside as the two teams headed into halftime with no tallies on the scoreboard.

Freshman forward Alexandre Bernier deflected a Chaminade pass out of the backline four minutes into the second half and scooped up the loose ball and went one-on-one with Yasue. Bernier took a step past Yasue and sent a strike at the goal but it hit the woodwork and bounced out to keep the game tied.

Chaminade finally found the back of the net in the 60th minute when Brison Kim beat Raygoza on a bouncing ball off a corner that fell to his feet, giving them a 1-0 advantage. Junior midfielder Chris Barrios threatened to tie the game in the 71st minute with a strike that was handled by Yasue, with Raygoza also receiving more work as he made a pair of consecutive quick stops in the 82nd and 83rd minutes.

In the 84th minute, a Jamin Fonseca foul inside the Chaminade box gave Dominican a penalty quick that was quickly capitalized on as Garcia sent the ball over the outstretched hands of Yasue, with the ball glancing the bottom of the crossbar before finding the twine to knot the score at 1-1.

The extra frame didn't last long as a nifty play gave the Penguins a 2-1 victory. A give-and-go between Grande and Baca ended with a perfect through-pass onto the right foot of Baca. Baca, with his head up, spotted a streaking Silverbush and sent a sensational pass to the front of the net from the corner of the box, a pass that landed directly onto the left foot of Silverbush. Silverbush finished the sensational setup, giving Dominican the 2-1 victory.

Dominican now will enjoy a five-day break before taking its talents to Southern California for a matchup with Concordia University, Irvine on Thursday.
